​Did You Know? ​

• Approximately 500 million women and girls worldwide lack access to adequate facilities for menstrual hygiene management (MHM). This includes access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, as well as affordable menstrual hygiene materials. The lack of these essential resources contributes to absenteeism in schools and workplaces, affecting educational and economic opportunities for women and girls (Menstrual Health and Hygiene: World Bank, UNICEF).

• Only 39% of schools globally provide menstrual health education, with significantly lower rates in primary schools. In some regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa, less than 1 in 8 schools offer menstrual products for free or for purchase, highlighting the need for improved education and resource distribution (Menstrual Education: World Health) Organization).

• Poor oral health during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including low birth weight and preterm birth. Research indicates that hormonal changes during pregnancy can exacerbate periodontal (gum) disease, which impacts overall maternal health (Pregnancy and Dental Health: National Women's Health Network, Today's RDH)

• Women and girls in developing countries are at higher risk of HIV infection due to factors such as limited access to education, healthcare, and preventive measures, as well as societal norms that restrict their ability to make informed decisions about their health. In sub-Saharan Africa, young women aged 15-24 accounted for 25% of new HIV infections in 2020, despite representing only 10% of the population (HIV and AIDS: Our World in Data​, UN Women).
